That’s it… I’m taking them to New York!
Travel. As the old expression goes, it ‘broadens the mind’. I’m a great believer in the benefits of travel – the opportunity to experience different cultures, indulge in unfamiliar cuisine, and see a variety of amazing locations and tourist attractions around the globe. As a child, I used to go on annual camping trips with my family throughout France, soaking up the sun on the Cote D’Azur, exploring chateaus in the Loire Valley and eating copious amounts of cheese, frites and baguettes. As an adult, it’s an essential part of my annual calendar ensuring that I have holidays to look forward to; indeed, in recent years I’ve indulged in Belgian chocolate in Brussels, celebrated a Spanish fiesta at Elche Night of Fire (an unforgettable and slightly terrifying, seemingly endless fireworks display!), and got lost amongst the tiny, labyrinthine streets of Venice.
It is through my love of travel and firm belief that it is an intrinsic part of personal development that I am motivated to plan our upcoming Key Stage 4 visit to New York City. I was 20 years old the first time I visited The Big Apple, still a student myself in my second year of university. Although an ambitious undertaking, I can think of few places that I would want to share with the students of The Lion Works more. To look down on such an incredible city from the 80th floor of The Empire State Building, once the tallest building in the world; to wander through Central Park seeing famous sights like the Bethesda Fountain, Strawberry Fields and Belvedere Castle; to tour Madison Square Gardens, home of the world-famous New York Knicks NBA basketball team and the New York Rangers NHL hockey team. I honestly can’t wait to help facilitate these unforgettable experiences for our students, some of whom have never ventured outside the boundaries of Dorset, let alone embarked upon a 7-hour flight to another continent!
Start spreading the news… this June, The Lion Works goes international!
